Kindergarten & Elementary

Ages 5 - 6+ Years

Students that have completed Montessori early childhood programs are often more advanced than their peers. Montessori students enjoy their freedom of choice and ability to work through the curriculum at their own pace. Children learn within a mixed-age community where education is guided by each child's individual development, interests, and abilities, rather than strictly by their chronological age. This structure encourages collaboration, leadership, and personalized growth.

Teachers understand that students may accelerate in some areas and require additional time in others. We provide opportunities for more complex and in-depth discovery of subjects students are interested in. Our students do not just memorize facts, they learn the “hows,” “whens,” and “whys”. Montessori is consciously designed to recognize and address different learning styles.

Montessori children study geography and diverse customs fostering global citizens that have empathy and understanding for those that are different. We love celebrating the many cultures in our school community. Children learn through holiday foods, songs, and stories from around the world. We also invite teachers and families to share their traditions in ways that are fun and easy for young children to enjoy. Ms. Harminder—who speaks English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu—is excited to teach the class some Indian music and dance in August.

Our Kindergarten Program is a more advanced program. By five, most Montessori children will begin to read, and many will be introduced to multiplication and division. It is at this time when many of the earlier lessons come together and become a permanent part of the young child’s understanding.

For students that continue to our Elementary Program at Stockton Montessori the transition is seamless. Our prepared environment offers continuity with familiar routines and learning materials. Teachers introduce materials to students according to their level and readiness. Older students that have mastered beginning skills require new challenges so the classroom and curriculum will reflect their maturing needs. For example, practical life and sensorial activities may no longer be a focal point as they learn more advanced math and science. Please see our curriculum list for an overview of the subjects taught.
